- Sub: RE: Move MacApp ideas
-
- I too wish that I could distinguish between MacApp Mail and other Mail.
-
- One solution that I think would be reasonable until AppleLink can be revamped
- is to allow one to have more than one AppleLink Address without the associated
- additional expense, in other words, 2 addresses and one account.
-
- We would all have to log on twice but at least we could separate the MacApp
- from the non-MacApp. No-one would even need to know about our MacApp only
- address as it could be considered a read-only address.
-
- One could set things up so that both addresses logged on at 2AM if one wished.
-
- This concept would need a change of policy at Apple that might not occur.
-
- A related issue:
-
- The biggest problem I see with moving MacApp.Tech$ discussions is delivery. I
- want this stuff to come to me. There could be another form of delivery though:
-
- From the beginning TreeSaver was designed so that it would be possible to
- update one's database of AppleLinks in bulk. We had also thought that we would
- offer a subscription of indexed, compressed and processed links.
-
- I had originally thought in terms of a monthly or bi-monthly subscription. One
- would received a diskette in the mail spend a few minutes adding it to their
- database and have all the advantages of extensive indexing without all the
- work.
-
- I now feel that it might be better to offer a diskette on a more frequent
- basis. Once a week or even potentially twice a week. This would be a quick
- turn-around operation. I would think that you could get the links from the
- previous week every monday or tuesday.
-
- The advantages would be great even for those that already download all of
- MacApp.Tech$ on a daily basis. One could look at all the threads that had
- developed or been added to in the last week on a subject basis, skipping things
- that were of little interest. If 3 months down the road one wanted to find the
- thread on persistence it would be possible, even easy. This would not be the
- case if that were a subject that would normally have been discarded.
-
- I know of several members of MacApp.Tech$ that download everything once a week.
- If these ones received a subscription of links, they might be better off.
- There would be no need to clog their in-basket with MacApp.Tech$ since they
- would be receiving the information on a timely basis already and in a much more
- easily digestible format.
-
- The only ones that would not be better off having the subscription are those
- who participate on a daily basis in the discussions and those that are so
- interested that they just MUST have the links EVERY day.
-
- Most of the 250 or so addresses are not regular participants, probably not
- because of disinterest but time constraints, too busy using this stuff to talk
- about it. They must be interested in it or they would not subject their
- in-box to 50 to 100 links per week. I suspect a great number of these would be
- content to receive in the mail an indexed set of TreeSaver threads.
-
- This might cause the membership of MacApp.Tech$ to drop (in half or more) while
- actually increasing its audience (there are lots of MacAppers not on
- AppleLink). Things would be much smoother (no missing or doubly sent links) if
- MacApp.Tech$ were only composed of those who were active (even overly active
- like myself) and extremely interested. This would not preclude those not on
- MacApp.Tech$ from participating, they would always be able to post questions
- here, there might be an increase of "Please send this to me and cc
- MacApp.Tech$" though. Those that would be content to be on a one week basis
- might be happier being off MacApp.Tech$ if they could get the information
- somewhere else.
-
- As far as pricing, this would depend greatly on interest. But I am thinking
- that it might be very possible to have things priced so that it would be
- cheaper (perhaps substantially so) than downloading every day.
-
- What are your thoughts? What kind of participation could I expect? What
- pricing seems reasonable?
-
- Steve, you posted the original change suggestion. Would you be willing to
- have everything come to you once a week?
-
- Please respond only to me on anything other than the general concept. I don't
- want to clog MacApp.Tech$ with 35 "Sign me up"s or "I hate it"s, but I don't
- mind receiving them myself.
-
- - Curtis (I've rambled long enough) Faith
